The Vivienne Westwood brand is known to have a rich and iconoclastic heritage as ‘UK’s most culturally significant fashion designer’. The brand has come out with a new collection that is made using recycled canvas, reused roadside banners and unused leather off-cuts; all their products are handmade in Nairobi by Kenyan women whose sewing and tailoring skills have been developed and elevated for an international market.
Westwood is the latest in a line of designers embracing sustainable production in Africa. Other labels that use artisans in developing countries to promote self-sufficient economies are Sass & Bide, Maiyet, Edun and Suno. “It’s quite incredible to think we might be able to save the world through fashion.” (Dame Vivienne Westwood)
The new collection of rucksacks, clothe bags and totes are classed as being suitable for both genders. It also features bold motifs; chose from an anchor print, Westwood’s signature Orb and squiggle-print. The collection is set to launch this week on ASOS with prices starting at £58 (approximately €70), I think they affordable, and an ethical way to shop the Africa trend
