3-Amaka Osakwe On The Cover-OnoBello-917

The Genevieve Pink Ball is one of Nigeria’s most popular style events for all Stylistas to show what they’ve got. Nonetheless we still have it at the back of our minds that it is for a great cause (Breast Cancer) and we love causes at Madame Solange.

But back to the style business, if you are yet to get your style fixes and you are like me who does last minute preparations, here are some quick style advice and tips on how to choose the perfect dress to wear to a Pink ball, charity ball or gala.

Point to note it’s a time to have your ‘Cinderella moment’ and time to sparkle like your most favorite celebrity.

Follow these style rules you and you can be as glamorous and fabulous as the celebrities who walk the Oscars red carpet.

Comfort and fit is Key

A very important style rule is that you always shop for comfort, especially when choosing a gown for an event. This is non-negotiable because if this is not your priority I say sit this one out.

Your outfit should be an extension of your personal style, suited for your body shape and age. It’s not about wearing the most extravagant gown; it’s about fit and style that works well for you. This is rule number one to looking and feeling like a princess

Style, Style Style

We can’t overemphasize the importance of style when choosing your outfit. Just so you know elegance and shapely is the way to go for an exquisite look. Banish thoughts of showing way too much skin because this can take you straight to style –exile. Oops! Except you are young with a body like Osas Ighodaro, then you can show off your edgy curves with a sheath style. But if you are not just forget it, highlight your good points and leave the rest for the experts.

Style tips for body shapes include simple style tricks like; A-line or full-skirted gown to conceal bigger hips and thighs with a fitted bodice to balance out proportion. Style your body with an empire line dress to hide tummy areas and for those with a smaller bust.  If you’re shapely you could choose a mermaid style that is fitted and flares out at the knees.  If you have a beautiful décolletage, show off your assets with a strapless gown.

Rules for fabric and color

Ensure not to wear cheap fabric this can ruin your paparazzi moments, stick to good quality for your very elegant paparazzi moments.

Sparkle and dazzle all you want but don’t overdo embellishments or sequins this will only scream ‘Liberace’ rather than Genevieve and avoid too much fabric, i.e. a huge-skirted gown will make you look like a bad version of Scarlett O’Hara.

Remember the color rule to match fabric with your skin tone and age. If you are over 40 avoid harsh,

Avoid harsh, bright colors or trend-driven patterns. Flattering pastels are most suitable.

Fashion Accessories

Avoid the fashion accessory overkill note that if your dress is highly embellished then a cue for you to keep it simple and work with a ‘style duo’ e.g. earrings and a cocktail ring.

Simple style gowns can be paired with statement accessories such as chandelier earrings, jeweled cuff or crystal bangles.

If you feel over blinged then take the Coco Chanel style rule take one piece off before your go.

Shoes and Bags

Add a little sparkle and dazzle but keep it simple of course. Elegant, classic styles such as peep-toes, sling backs with stiletto heels are a good choice.

If you don’t fit into the sparkle zone then go nude or tone your outfit with your frock.

Chunky closed in shoes; boots or summer wedges are not advisable,

When it comes to bags there is only one bag to choose to complement your ball gown and that is an elegant hand-held clutch.  Whether the finish is embellished, metallic or unadorned, this is the only option.

Glamour speaks volume when it comes to hair and makeup for such events but an overdone hairdo or makeup can mar your whole parade.

Opt for an elegant and softer look such as a tousled up-do or natural wavy tresses.  Always!  If you do want to try a more elaborate up-do, then please leave it in the hands of a professional and book yourself into your hairdresser.

Makeup is always dependent upon age and skin tone however a well-blended smoky eye and soft blush is a fabulous choice.

Women make a common error of piling on heavy foundation which is instantly aging and unflattering.  A dewy, natural finish will always enhance and flatter your look.
